Statement from Andrea Peraza

My name is Andrea Peraza and I live in district 12.  Today I’m here to help my community and explain why after school programs are important and to ask you to vote yes on the county executives proposed budget. My brother  attends the Latino community centers SOY PGH after school program in beechwood elementary school. This program helps him with understanding and doing his school work, it has helped him grow as a person, and it has helped him to make friends. I have seen how this program has helped my brother and his friends to understand how their new school works and in many cases helped them navigate their school as they are learning English.  SOY PGH, and many other after school programs are not daycare. They are more than that.  They are safe spaces for our kids to be, to grow and to learn.  SOY PGH provides them the feeling of a community while also preparing them for the future by helping them learn how to do math, read, and more. I don’t know what we would do without the Latino Community Centers after school program so I urge you to please vote yes to the county executives proposed budget.

Mi nombre es Andrea Peraza y vivo en el distrito 12. Hoy estoy aquí para ayudar a mi comunidad y explicar por qué los programas extraescolares son importantes y para pedirles que voten sí al presupuesto propuesto por los ejecutivos del condado. Mi hermano asiste al programa extraescolar SOY PGH de los centros comunitarios latinos en la escuela primaria Beechwood. Este programa lo ayuda a comprender y realizar su trabajo escolar, lo ha ayudado a crecer como persona y lo ha ayudado a hacer amigos. He visto cómo este programa ha ayudado a mi hermano y a sus amigos a comprender cómo funciona su nueva escuela y, en muchos casos, los ha ayudado a navegar por su escuela mientras aprenden inglés. SOY PGH y muchos otros programas extraescolares no son guarderías. Son más que eso. Son espacios seguros para que nuestros niños estén, crezcan y aprendan. SOY PGH les brinda la sensación de una comunidad al mismo tiempo que los prepara para el futuro al ayudarlos a aprender a hacer matemáticas, leer y más. No sé qué haríamos sin el programa extracurricular de los Centros Comunitarios Latinos, por eso les insto a que voten sí al presupuesto propuesto por los ejecutivos del condado.
